Een onderzoek van amerikaanse stranden in de staat Washinton laat zien dat er MRSA voorkomt in het zand en in het zeewater… hmm, is het zwemmen in de zee nu ook een reden om iemand in MRSA isolatie op te nemen?

Antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus from the sand and water of 5 of the 10 Puget Sound public beaches have been discovered by investigators from the University of Washington, Seattle.

Of the 12 S. aureus strains found at those beaches, 6 were methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and all but 1 of those 6 were resistant to multiple antibiotics, Marilyn C. Roberts, Ph.D., said in a press briefing at the annual Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

An outbreak of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in a Spanish hospital may be the first reported appearance of a linezolid-resistant strain of the organism, according to data reported Oct. 27.

Between April and June of this year, 12 patients in an intensive care unit at the Hospital Clinico San Carlos in Madrid were identified as having methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) that was also resistant to linezolid (Zyvox). Dr. Miguel Sanchez, an internist at the hospital, reported the outbreak during a press briefing at the jointly held annual Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) and the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
